Current is a central building block for prosperity, security, and well-being. It creates warmth and light, enables communication, and provides mobility. In fact, it is vital in areas where human lives depend on a reliable power supply. Measures are therefore taken in certain industries to keep the risk of outages as low as possible. These include both rotating and static uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, which are used to bridge power outages. A well-known supplier of UPS systems is Piller Group GmbH, which has seen steadily increasing demand with over 7000 kinetic energy storage systems installed and more than 6000 rotating UPS systems.
Piller Group GmbH owns 7 chamber furnaces at the Osterode am Harz site, which had already been in use for several years and required modernization. The control cabinets, along with their contents, were to be replaced and provided with a new controller that would function as a program controller as well as a controller in continuous operation. Furthermore, frequency converters and the safety temperature limiters, along with the control panel located on each furnace, had to be replaced.
The new complete plant
After a detailed analysis by JUMO Engineering, an individual solution was developed and implemented in close cooperation between Piller Group, JUMO, and MAGG Elektroanlagen (a JUMO system partner).
Plant control and automation is provided by the powerful JUMO variTRON 500, which is used to ensure plant self-sufficiency for a system of 2 furnaces. Thus, a total of 4 systems were implemented. The JUMO smartWARE Evaluation software handles the recording and visualization of the data.
A JUMO safety temperature limiter was also installed for each individual furnace to increase plant safety. MAGG Elektroanlagen GmbH was responsible for the schematic design, the planning, and the construction of the new control cabinet. It took care of the frequency converters installation, the JUMO variTRON 500 with all inputs/outputs, and the operating panel as well as the safety technology provided by JUMO safety temperature limiters. Similarly, MAGG Elektroanlagen was the contact for the delivery, setup, and cabling of the plant.
This way, any malfunctions that occur can be detected at an early stage so that adequate countermeasures can be taken. These include shutting down parts of the plant or alerting technical personnel.

JUMO is "more than sensors + automation". After all, the project implemented a complex solution tailored to the needs of the Piller Group, which included not only hardware but also software. This way, the customer receives a maximally efficient and safe system that virtually runs itself through automation and that can be evaluated flexibly from any location by JUMO smartWARE Evaluation.
